Infectious Disease and Immunology

infectious dInfectious diseases cause morbidity and mortality in the developing world and have great impact on productivity and quality of life. By addressing the infections before they spread, vaccines represent the most cost-effective way of managing these diseases. Therefore, there is increased need to study basic research on immune responses of host before the infection occurs, during the infection and after the proper treatment.
To lessen the impact of these diseases, the global health commu¬≠nity also needs low-cost tools to rapidly diagnose and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. When vaccines aren’t available, rapid point-of-contact diagnostics are needed to help medical professionals accurately prescribe effective treatment. Moreover, when accurate diagnosis is gathered from the field, public health official is able to analyze proper data and eventually better manage the epidemics. Despite their potential to dramatically improve global health, developing these tools {vaccines and diagnostics) for the developing world is not a priority for for-profit companies, as the financial returns remain minimal.
To prevent the spread of infectious diseases, Medical Education and Research Center, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia developed an Infectious disease and Immunology Laboratory Facility. The facilities will support various research activities in infectious disease. Furthermore, the facility will consist of:

  • Molecular Biology Laboratory
  • Serology and Immunology Laboratory
  • Virology and Tissue Culture Laboratory
  • Parasitological culture Laboratory
  • Cell culture laboratory
  • Genetic Engineering Laboratory
  • Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection Control Laboratory

VISION

Become the center of excellence for research in infectious disease and immunology in Indonesia.

MISSION

  • To perform cutting-edge basic and clinical research on emerging infectious diseases
  • To perform community and hospital based researches which can be used as references for stakeholders to make national health policies.
  • To improve collaboration in infectious diseases with other universities in Indonesia
  • To provide training in these areas of research and to support a national response in the event of a biodefense emergency
  • To establish a research facility with the highest attention to community and laboratory safety and security
